The Power Of
Understanding

About Fay Butler-Clifford
B.A., B. Soc. Admin., Dip. Ed.

Fay has worked in various roles during her educational career including classroom teaching, teacher training, educational research and curriculum and policy development. She has always enjoyed working with people whether they be adult or child and has vast experience in working with children who are deemed to be ‘different’ whether that be physically, neurologically, emotionally or culturally. Nothing pleases her more than to see someone benefit from the work she has done with them, especially if this involves their overcoming of a barrier to their progress. If they can have fun together on the journey, then so much the better!

Fay lives with her husband near Brisbane, Queensland. When not teaching, she enjoys travelling, cycling, swimming, painting and songwriting. Oh, and wrangling her highly spirited young feline, from which she now sports multiple scars!

Tuition Services Offered

The Barton Reading and Spelling System

Susan Barton’s system is an explicit and systematic phonics program influenced by the ground breaking research of Samuel Orton and Anna Gillingham conducted in the United States in the 1920's. It incorporates multi-sensory instruction techniques and has a proven track record of success in assisting children and adults to learn to spell and read, especially if they have dyslexia.

An explanation of why the Barton System works so effectively is contained in the video accessible below:

For the system to be effective, it is important for students to attend two sessions per week. Parents then need to assist their child with at least two hours of homework per week.

Please note that overcoming dyslexia in order to become a competent reader and speller can take several years for a moderately affected person and longer for someone more seriously affected. Unfortunately there are no shortcuts to this process.

Fay also offers tuition in English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences on the Koala Go platform from years one to six for children and adults. Instruction is based on the content and methods described in the National Australian Curriculum.

Small group options are available as well as one-to-one. These services are also perfect for homeschoolers who wish to practise and consolidate their child’s academic skills.

What’s included?

  • preliminary assessment to ascertain a student's current needs and what their individual program should include
  • each session is planned in advance and tailored to provide each student with maximum benefit
  • coaching of parents at each session to enable them to use multi-sensory techniques at home (Barton System only)
  • regular assessment, reporting and progress monitoring
  • homework and extra practice materials

Rates

$95 per 50 minute session one-to-one (only option for Barton System).

For all other subjects, if preferred, small group rates also apply as follows:

  • Two students: $60 per student
  • Small group (3 - 4): $40 per student

Lessons are purchased in blocks of ten. Up-front payment attracts a 5% discount.
N.B. Discounts are available for siblings of current students and families on demonstrably low incomes.

The Decline in Australian Educational Standards

Australian educational standards have been falling steadily as compared with those of other countries in recent years. Debates rage about likely causes and possible ways to improve our systems whilst our students slip further and further behind. In addition to problems linked to lack of funding, inadequate curriculum development, ineffective teacher training practices etc. the current cohort of students have also had their education negatively impacted by the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Private tuition is an excellent resource to give your child the tools and support he or she needs to counter the effects of the aforementioned obstacles to their progress.

Why Learn with On Point Online?

Fay is a highly experienced and qualified educator.

Other tuition companies may assign your child to a student who may know their subject, but not necessarily how to teach it. This can be especially problematic if your child has learning difficulties. Additionally, such companies can tend to switch your child's tutor from time to time with the result that your child experiences multiple ‘take offs’ and ‘landings’ with different people, none of whom are really accountable for your child's progress.

Online tuition is convenient, less intrusive and a great deal of fun!

Fay utilises the Koala Go platform for sessions, which creates a Minecraft-like virtual environment featuring various characters, landscapes, rewards, games and puzzles to keep your child stimulated, motivated and focused.

For students experiencing difficulty with reading and/or spelling she teaches using the Barton Reading and Spelling System.

It is an proven research-based, multisensory approach to the teaching of reading and spelling to children and adults (especially those with dyslexia.)

Fay cares about your child and their progress. She also cares about your bank balance.

Fay's pricing is very competitive for the services offered. She aims to enable your child to build their academic skills to the point where they no longer need her help as soon as realistically possible.

I can highly recommend Fay as an outstanding tutor with a talent for building confidence in her pupils. She's a patient and skilled teacher who takes the time to form a real connection with her students. Dylan always looked forward to his sessions with Fay. He was a few years behind his cohort after Covid, but with her ongoing support he was able to gain back that lost ground. Best decision we ever made for his education.
